Elijah E. Cocks handles preparation and prosecution of patent applications in a wide variety of areas, including software, electronics, mechanical engineering, electromechanics and materials science. Mr. Cocks has drafted and prosecuted US and foreign patent applications for university and industry clients in areas such as: semiconductor device topologies and manufacturing processes, liquid crystal displays and manufacturing processes, wireless data transfer systems, fuel cells, fuel reforming technologies, superconducting materials, optical systems, software systems and business methods. Mr. Cocks has also advised clients on the formation and management of patent portfolio strategies, prepared patent validity and non-infringement opinions, and has also provided intellectual property support in connection with litigation, licensing transactions and merger and acquisition deals. Prior to joining our firm, Mr. Cocks was at the law firm of Choate, Hall & Stewart, LLP. Prior to that, he worked as a Research Consultant at the Electronic Materials Center of Kobe Steel USA where he researched the design of surface acoustic wave devices utilizing single crystal piezoelectrics in combination with diamond thin films. He was also an undergraduate and graduate Research Assistant at the Thayer School of Engineering where he studied the process of nanocrystalline production through the use of equal-channel angular extrusion and designed experimental devices for the process of friction stir-welding in which materials are plasticized and joined as a result of heat generated solely by friction. In addition to a general mechanical engineering educational background, Mr. Cocks’s technical education included studies of semiconducting materials and devices, material degradation and fault analysis, electromagnetics, feedback control of dynamic systems, and analog and digital electronics. Mr. Cocks is currently admitted to practice law in Massachusetts and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Cocks is a member of the Dartmouth Lawyers Association, the Dartmouth Society of Engineers, the American Intellectual Property Law Association, and the Boston Patent Law Association. He received an AB in Engineering Sciences from Dartmouth College, a BE in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Engineering Management (MEM) from the Thayer of School of Engineering at Dartmouth College, and a JD from Boston College Law School. |
